[Users] Possible Power Shutoff for NERSC, October 9 and 10, 2019

Dear NERSC Users, PG&E, the utility company that supplies Berkeley Lab and NERSC with electricity, has placed the county in which NERSC resources are located on a fire weather watch status for Wednesday and Thursday, October 9 and 10. A fire weather watch means upcoming weather conditions could result in extensive wildland fire occurrences or extreme fire behavior. Due to PG&E's role last year in the worst wildfire in California's recorded history (the Camp Fire), they are taking a very conservative approach to fire safety this year by shutting down and inspecting power lines during periods of high risk. *This means that it is possible that power to NERSC could be shut down as early as 12:01 am (Pacific time) on Wednesday morning.* Should a power shutdown occur, it will last until PG&E and local authorities determine there is no longer a critical fire danger and PG&E has had the opportunity to assess the electrical systems during daylight hours. This could be several hours or a few days. NERSC has the majority of its resources on the Berkeley Lab campus, but it is possible that our HPSS systems at the Oakland Scientific Facility could lose power while Berkeley Lab remains up. In this case, only HPSS resources would be unavailable. NERSC has a generator that can power its auxiliary systems such as the NERSC website, but not its HPC systems. If you are unable to access Cori during this period, please check the NERSC website for status information. Another source of NERSC status information is, which will include a line entry about the status of NERSC should power to Berkeley Lab be shut down. Thanks for your patience as PG&E exercises caution during this wildfire season.
