[Users] Maintenance for All NERSC Global Filesystems Beginning Tomorrow

Dear NERSC users: NERSC has been in communication with our filesystem vendors about the hiccups in performance that we've all been experiencing, and they have provided us with a potential course of action. The upcoming Cori Scratch maintenance, scheduled to begin tomorrow and end on Thursday, means that Cori will be unavailable to users for these three days. This is a window of opportunity for NERSC to perform some work that would otherwise require us to have an additional downtime. Therefore, *NERSC will take a maintenance on all NERSC global filesystems beginning tomorrow morning at 7 am Pacific Time.* Filesystems impacted include project, projecta, projectb, homes, common, seqfs, and dna. In particular, we will perform upgrades to the network associated with the NERSC global filesystems. These upgrades are one step toward addressing performance issues we have seen at the scale at which NERSC filesystems are used. These issues are more or less unique to NERSC, due to filesystem usage patterns that are not seen at peer HPC centers at this scale. We are confident that, even if it does not completely solve the issues we've encountered, this upgrade is a step in the right direction. We expect the schedule to be as follows: * Tuesday, September 10 at 7 am: Cori brought down and becomes unavailable to users. * Tuesday, 8 am: Global Filesystems taken offline and maintenance begins * Tuesday, 8 pm: Global Filesystem network maintenance complete and filesystems (other than Cori scratch) return to service * Thursday, September 12 at 7 pm: Deadline for Cori to return to users. Auxiliary services that depend on NERSC global filesystems, such as database services, Jupyter, and any services in Spin and Science Gateways that require global filesystems will also be impacted. Furthermore, maintenance originally planned for Wednesday on Spin and JGI web, db, and int servers will be moved to Tuesday to further reduce downtimes. Thanks for your patience as we improve the reliability and performance of NERSC filesystems for you!
