Professional Background
- 1977-82: sports writer/editor for the Gainesville (Fla.) Sun newspaper.
- 1983-85: attended the University of Florida, receiving B.S. in physics.
- 1985-93: Attended graduate school in physics at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. M.S. in 1986 and a Ph.D. in 1993. Thesis title:, Stellar and Gas Dynamics of Interacting Ring Galaxies. Graduate Advisor: Dr. Susan Lamb (Also see Colliding Galaxies Group). My thesis was based on computer models performed using Cray XMP and Cray 2 supercomputers at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois.
- 1993-96: National Research Council fellowship in the Space Sciences Division at NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, CA. While there I performed research on colliding galaxies and the stability of computer models of galaxies. My computer calculations were run on the Connection Machine and Cray C90 at Ames' Numerical Aerospace Simulation facility.
- 1996-present: Staff member, User Services Group, National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
IMAX Cosmic Voyage Movie
While finishing my thesis I ran computer simulations and consulted on the visualization and animation of the Cosmic Voyage IMAX movie. My calculations and visualization ideas formed the basis for the portion of the movie depicting galactic collisions.Research & CV
