Brief Biography

I manage the User Services Group at the National Energy Research Scientific Computing (NERSC) Center at E.O. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Previously, I worked as a consultant in the User Services Group specializing in chemistry and biology software, optimization techniques for high-end computers, and performance evaluation. I came to Berkeley Lab from the IBM Almaden Research Center where I worked as a postdoctoral fellow and research associate from 1991-1996. During this time I worked to develop computational chemistry software for the Science and Technology division, and was involved in technical marketing activities. Prior to joining IBM, I spent a year as a postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Chemistry, University of British Columbia, Vancouver. I obtained both my B.Sc. and Ph.D. at the Chemistry Department, University of Sheffield, U.K.

Projects

Architecture Evaluation

Recently, I have been working with members of the Future Technologies Group in the Computational Research Division, and members of the NERSC Science-Driven System Architecture team on evaluating computer architectures for scientific and technical computing algorithms, looking particularly at both homogeneous and heterogeneous multi-core architectures.

As part of the first international team, I visited the Earth Simulator Center several times during the period 2003-2005 to conduct performance evaluation studies, and compare this technology to high-end computers in the US, such as the systems at NERSC, NCCS, and ALCF. Our work was featured at Supercomputing '04 , '05, and '06, in addition to several other international conferences.

High-end Computing Procurements

As the deputy team leader, I participated in the project to assemble benchmarks for, procure, and deploy the 100 Teraflop/s Franklin Cray XT4 system.

Previously, I served on the NERSC procurement team leading to the deployment of the 10 Teraflop/s system seaborg.nersc.gov.

User Training

I am a frequent contributor to the NERSC training program, and also occasionally teach guest lectures for CS Department at U.C. Berkeley.
