Migration Support

PE does not support node-by-node migration. You must migrate all of the nodes in a system partition to a new level of PE at the same time.

The migration path for PE 3.2, PSSP 3.4, and AIX 5.1 is slightly different than previous migration paths. IBM suggests that you first migrate to PSSP 3.4, then migrate to AIX 5.1 and PE 3.2 at the same time. For this reason, PE 3.1 coexists with PSSP 3.4, for 32-bit applications on AIX 4.3.3 only. PE 3.2 requires AIX 5.1. There are several migration paths available:

  1. AIX 4.2.1 or 4.3.3, PSSP 2.4, and PE 2.3 to AIX 4.3.3, PSSP 3.4, and PE 3.1 (32-bit only)
  2. AIX 4.2.1 or 4.3.3, PSSP 2.4, and PE 2.3 to AIX 5.1, PSSP 3.4, and PE 3.2
  3. AIX 4.3.3, PSSP 3.1.1, and PE 2.4 to AIX 4.3.3, PSSP 3.4, and PE 3.1 (32-bit only)
  4. AIX 4.3.3, PSSP 3.1.1, and PE 2.4 to AIX 5.1, PSSP 3.4, and PE 3.2
  5. AIX 4.3.3, PSSP 3.2, and PE 3.1 to AIX 4.3.3, PSSP 3.4, and PE 3.1 (32-bit only)
  6. AIX 4.3.3, PSSP 3.2, and PE 3.1 to AIX 5.1, PSSP 3.4, and PE 3.2
  7. AIX 4.3.3, PSSP 3.4, and PE 3.1 to AIX 5.1, PSSP 3.4, and PE 3.2

For example, a customer running PE 3.1, PSSP 3.2, and AIX 4.3.3 can migrate to PSSP 3.4 before they migrate to AIX 5.1, without migrating to a new level of PE. However, they must not migrate to AIX 5.1 before they migrate to PSSP 3.4. And once they migrate to AIX 5.1, they must also migrate to PE 3.2.

Lastly, PE 3.1 can coexist and is supported on standalone workstations with AIX 5.1, without PSSP installed.

Note:
A PTF is required for PE 2.3 to run in binary compatibility mode on AIX 4.3.2 or AIX 4.3.3, but the PTF can be applied to PE 2.3 before migrating AIX 4.2.1 to 4.3.2 or 4.3.3.

3.1 3.2 4.3.3
2.4 3.1 4.3.2 or later
