NERSC Initiative for Scientific Exploration (NISE)

The NERSC director receives 10% of the total MPP hours on computational systems. Part of this time is allocated through the NERSC Initiative for Scientific Exploration (NISE) program. The 2014 NISE Call for Proposals is open between November 11 and December 8, 2013. The goals for this program in 2014 are:

  • HPC and data analysis: Projects that leverage extreme scale parallel computing to solve big data analysis challenges.
  • Highly collaborative HPC: Projects that join community teams, knowledge basesor gateways with NERSC computing and data capabilities.
  • Extreme networking: Large-scale computing projects that leverage NERSC's 100GB border network connectivity.

Some important results obtained with NISE awards:

Important New Method for Studying Solar Materials

Using a NERSC NISE award, researchers were able to compute the phonon-assisted interband optical absorption spectrum of silicon entirely from first principles. Read More »
