At NERSC, a series of benchmarks were run using a Texas Memory RAM-SAN. These benchmarks were done within our PROBE environment . PROBE is a joint HPSS research and devlopment project between Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Computer Science and Mathematics Division and NERSC at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The NERSC Parallel Distributed Systems Facility (PDSF) was used for the client side of the HPSS testing.

A series of three different benchmarks were run and the results are presented in this set of web documents. Initial baseline timing benchmarks were run using the UNIX utility dd. To benchmark transactional performance we used the Encina database system that is used by HPSS. The final benchmarks used HPSS from the PDSF system across jumbo gigE.

The hardware configuration used for the benchmarks run at NERSC were:

All systems were connected to the Extreme 5I Gigabit switch via copper Syskonnect Cards. All systems were configured with jumbo GigE. The file systems for pdsflx151-pdsf160 was an ext2 filesystem on 4 75GB IBM Deskstar Drives. The file system for pdsflxnew was an ext2 filesystem on a 15 drive x 31GB Raidzone Raid5 disks.
