Grid Computing at NERSC: OSG and Client Documentation

Table of Contents:

Forms:

Using OSG and Globus client software

On your workstation:
Download and install the OSG client software. Then run the following to setup your environment:

% . $INSTALL_DIR/setup.sh
or
% source $INSTALL_DIR/setup.csh

On PDSF:
Use the module command, to load the OSG environment:

% module load globus/OSG
Alternately, you can directly source the OSG setup script:
% . /opt/OSG/setup.sh
or
% source /opt/OSG/setup.csh

Using modules on Jacquard, Bassi and DaVinci:
Use the module command to load the OSG or Globus toolkit. Where possible, you should use the default OSG module.
For Default OSG modules:

% module load osg
For OSG client software (davinci):
% module load osg/client
For OSG CE software (jacquardgrid, davinci):
% module load osg/ce
For non-OSG Globus (bassigrid, davinci):
% module load globus

OSG Users

OSG users should note that they will need to explicitly register with NERSC before they can run their jobs here. Access is on an individual user basis, rather than a per V.O. basis

Usage policies for OSG resources at NERSC.

  • User must read and sign NERSC Computer Usage Policy, and return this to NERSC via mail or fax.
  • Users will not be allowed to share an account - each account must map back to an individual user.*
  • The user must have an allocation at NERSC through their VO.
  • The user must have an account at NERSC and a valid Grid DN in the NIM database.

* This requirement may be reviewed in the future, to ensure continued OSG compatibility.

In order to run at NERSC, an OSG user must go through the following process.

  1. If you already have a NERSC account, skip to step 5.
  2. Apply for a NERSC account through the OSG new user form.
  3. Read and sign the NERSC Computer Usage Policy form.
  4. Mail or fax the above form to NERSC Account support.
  5. Contact the person in charge of the group's activity at NERSC. By default, you will be associated with the OSG allocation and your P.I./P.I. Proxy will be Miron Livny and Doug Olson.
  6. If you belong to a VO supported by NERSC, contact the NERSC support staff and your PI to make sure that you are included in the appropriate files.
  7. Once your account is ready, you will need to add your cert DN through the NIM interface
