October 30 Power Upgrade

Beginning Monday, October 30, there will be a major power upgrade in the NERSC machine room. This page documents the planned schedule for taking down the various systems and subsequently returning them to service. All times are Pacific Standard Time.

All systems must be powered down so work can begin by 11:00. User access to most NERSC system will be terminated at 04:00. The outage is expected to last between 36 and 48 hours. Once the electrical contractor has restored power, NERSC staff will begin the process of bringing the Center back into production. Compute systems that mount NGF will not return to service until NGF is operational. For status updates, including estimates of the return to production of NERSC services, please see the Message of the Day.

Network Access

All network access to NERSC systems will be disabled at 09:15. Network connectivity will resume approximately 30 minutes after power is restored. There may be a few 30-second network interruptions for approximately 4 hours after power is restored.

Seaborg

A LoadLeveler reservation will be used to guarantee that all batch jobs have completed by 04:00. Interactive logins and processes will also be killed at 04:00. Seaborg will return to full service approximately 4 hours after NGF returns to service.

Jacquard

A PBS reservation will be used to guarantee that all batch jobs have completed by 04:00. Interactive logins and processes will also be killed at 04:00. Jacquard will return to full service approximately 2 hours after NGF returns to service.

Bassi

A LoadLeveler reservation will be used to guarantee that all batch jobs have completed by 04:00. Interactive logins and processes will also be killed at 04:00. Bassi will return to full service approximately 2 hours after NGF returns to service.

DaVinci

DaVinci will be taken down at 04:00. It will return to service approximately 1 hour after NGF returns to service.

PDSF

PDSF will be removed from service at 04:00; all batch and interactive processes will be killed. The system will return to service approximately 6 hours after NGF returns to service.

HPSS

The two HPSS systems (archive.nersc.gov and hpss.nersc.gov) will become unavailable at 04:00. The NERSC AFS cell also will be taken down at 04:00. All NERSC storage systems will be returned to service approximately 2 hours after power is restored.

NGF

NGF will be powered down once all the systems that mount it have been removed from service. It will return to service approximately 4 hours after power is restored to the Center.

Web Site

The NERSC website will remain available during the outage, with reduced functionality. In particular, pages that require password authentication (NIM, batch queue status, completed jobs, etc) will not be available. There will be brief interruptions in web availability shortly before and after the power outage. For status updates, including estimates of the return to production of NERSC services, please see the Message of the Day.

NIM

NIM will become unavailable beginning at 06:30, and will return to service approximately 1 hour after power is restored.

CVS Server

The NERSC CVS server will be removed from service at 06:30, and will return to service approximately 1 hour after power is restored.

License Servers

The remote license servers will be removed from service at 06:30, and will return to service approximately 30 minutes after power is restored. During the outage, remote applications such as IDL that depend on the NERSC license servers will be unavailable.
