Beyond 2000:

In five years a paradigm shift is likely in this very active field of research and commercial interests but it is not possible to predict. This paper is built on the assumption that technology will maintain the present course. With no shifts in the technology development the workstation and MPP technologies will be convergent and the needs of the access center for high-performance computing purposes would likely vanish provided network bandwidths increase substantially as expected. However, mass storage resources may continue to benefit from economy of scale and justify the existence of a centralized tertiary storage system.
