Next: Encourage collaborations and integration
Up: Specific Recommendations
Previous: Focus efforts to transition
The network is the glue that holds the computational resources and
scientific collaborations together. The use of the World Wide Web
(WWW), email services, data exchange, remote visualization, etc., are
daily operations of professional scientists. Many sites operate
distributed file systems (AFS, DFS, NFS, etc.) and when the local
network is down work is not possible. The operation of networks
between sites are handled by ESnet. We recommend that specific
site-to-site connections and increased bandwidth be added on a
continuing basis to meet the rapidly increasing communication
requirements, but defer any specific recommendations to the various
ESnet governing committees.
