There are many large scale user applications that are not presently
operational on a parallel platform, but that would benefit from being
converted to use one. Efforts to transition applications to the NERSC
MPP and future parallel systems should be focussed on these
applications. The DOE High Performance Computing Research Centers
have done an excellent job in providing resources to the grand
challenge community to build their experience base. NERSC is in a
unique position to provide both development and production systems to
the majority of the ER scientific computing user community.
The choice of a portable programming model and the optimization of
software for a particular parallel platform are often in conflict.
There is a need to get applications working quickly on the new
resource and a need to be portable since the high performance
computing systems available for the next NERSC procurement have yet to
be completely designed. To meet these multifaceted requirements,
including user training, NERSC must have a highly qualified and
diverse parallel computational science and applications group that
should build strategic partnerships and collaborations with the core
ER physical and computational science research efforts.
