Operating Systems

The operating system (OS) and the base level software infrastructure (BLSI) must be a robust software suite or the computational resource will only be utilized by the most sophisticated users. The OS and BLSI must allow users to (in a secure fashion) manage files, run jobs (both interactively and in a batch facility), export data, interact with other computational resources and significant third party applications, etc.. The BLSI often acts as an extension of the OS. For example, automatic file migration to the hierarchial storage system may not be a component of the base OS but is an important component of the BLSI.
