The computing axiom ``Nothing happens in a computer without good
software'' is still true today and even more so with the advent of MPP
technology. The software infrastructure is what a user truly
interacts with and is now becoming a measure that distinguishes MPP
vendor offerings. The infrastructure includes distributed computing
tools, operating systems, network software, compilers debuggers,
performance tools, standards based libraries (e.g., BLAS, LAPACK,
etc.), job control and queuing systems, as well as third party
applications that are of great importance to many end users in the ER
community. Below we discuss aspects of the software infrastructure
that are required by the ER scientific computing user community.
