NERSC presents a day of training highlighting Bassi

Dear NERSC Users,

NERSC will offer a series of presentations highlighting Bassi, the IBM 
POWER 5 p575 system on Tuesday, June 13, 2006 . Online participation is 
available via a web conference, RealVideo streaming, and a 
teleconference. A web conference consists of a  telephone conference, a 
web-based tool that controls slide display, and a text-based chat window.

Please register by Wednesday, June 7 to reserve a spot. We must make 
advance arrangements to accommodate more than 20 remote attendees. NERSC 
is charged per connection, so we ask that remote participants from a 
single site gather in one location and use only a single connection if 
possible.

09:00 EDT (06:00 PDT) - Bassi Overview and Status: a high-level 
description of the system, its configuration, processors, interconnect, 
file systems, and software.

09:45 EDT (06:45 PDT) - POWER5 processor and Bassi node overview: POWER 
5 basics, differences from POWER 3, node configuration, memory layout, 
processor and memory affinity.

10:45 EDT (07:45 PDT) - The High Speed Interconnect and Switch: getting 
the most out of HPS - network characteristics (MPI & LAPI latency, 
bandwidth), runtime performance settings, network topology, differences 
from Seaborg.

11:30 EDT (08:30 PDT) - Compiling for Performance on Bassi: AIX Fortran, 
C, C++; recommended compiler options, useful compiler options, 
libraries, porting from Seaborg and Linux clusters.

13:30 EDT (10:30 PDT) - Benchmark Performance on Bassi: performance is 
compared to Seaborg, Jacquard, and a variety of other HPC platforms.

14:15 EDT (11:15 PDT) - Experiences Configuring, Debugging, Validating 
and Running on Bassi.

15:15 EDT (12:15 PDT) - High Level File Storage and Parallel I/O for 
Fusion Applications using ParallelHDF5.
