9/04 Seaborg Upgrade Schedule

Dear Seaborg User,

The delayed migration of Seaborg to AIX 5.2 and PE 4.1 will begin over
the Labor Day weekend. This upgrade will minimize overall downtime and
maximize available compute time. This puts some responsibility for job
management on Seaborg users. Here are some important times and events:

On Saturday, September 4, some Seaborg nodes will go out of service in
phases through Sunday evening. This should not affect any running jobs,
but users will see fewer available compute nodes.

At noon on Monday, September 6 (Labor Day), all queues will begin to
drain. The backfill class (LL class reg_bf) will be activated, and new
jobs will only be accepted for the backfill, debug, and interactive
queues. To learn more about the backfill class and job monitoring, see
the Seaborg Batch Jobs page:

http://www.nersc.gov/nusers/resources/SP/running_jobs/batch.php

Sometime Tuesday, September 7, all remaining user jobs will be killed.
It is the SOLE responsibility of Seaborg users to hold or cancel queued
jobs that might run beyond the start of Tuesday. There will be no
notice of killed jobs and no refunds.

We hope to have limited compute capacity available to users by the end
of Tuesday, September 7, and to have Seaborg operating at full capacity
by the end of Wednesday, September 8.

Please keep in mind that circumstances may force some deviations from
these plans. The MOTD available at www.nersc.gov under the HPC Users ->
Status and Statistics page should provide authoritative information.
