Allison Andrews is a member of the NERSC Storage Systems Group which is responsible for the maintenance of the centers shared storage resources including the GPFS center wide filesystems, and the HPSS archival storage systems as well as a number of ancilary systems. Allie has over 18 years experience in software development, systems administration, and data storage including positions at Carnegie Mellon University(where she also earned a degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering), Intuit, and now over 13 years with NERSC. As a member of the archival storage team she has helped maintain NERSCs two HPSS systems, and AFS cell including developing a cfengine based system management infrastructure. More recently, she has joined the NERSC Global Filesystem team which maintains the center's GPFS filesystems. As a member of this team she has brough along the cfengine infrastructure which was developed for the HPSS team, managed the deployment of shared home filesystems for the center's computing resources, evaluated new storage hardware and technologies, and developed the PIBS parallel backup system which backs up the center's home, and project filesystems to HPSS.

Describes how tape is used in the HPSS Archive and HPSS Backup systems at NERSC. Includes some examples of our organizations tape policies, our roadmap to Exascale and an example of tape in the Exascale Era, our observed tape reliability, and an overview of our locally developed Parallel Incremental Backup System (PIBS) which performs backups of our NGF file system.
