Tuomas Koskela got his PhD degree in applied physics from Aalto University (Finland) in 2015 under the supervision of Dr. Taina Kurki-Suonio. His thesis work  was on Monte Carlo modelling of fast ion confinement in Tokamak fusion reactors under 3D magnetic perturbations. In his thesis he developed the ASCOT code for parallel particle tracing in realistic tokamak geometry and carried out numerical simulations of ITER and many present-day tokamaks using leading HPC resources in Europe and Japan. Tuomas spent the last two years of his PhD at the JET experiment at CCFE in Culham, United Kingdom, and stayed there as a postdoc for one more year after completing his PhD. At CCFE, he worked on integrated whole-device modelling with a combination of reduced models and first-principles codes.
