Date: 2014-08-11 14:38:01

Hi PDSF Users, This is a reminder that PDSF will be offline tomorrow from 7:00 am to 11:00 pm for maintenance. We will set IO resources to zero at 5:00 pm today. Feel free to submit jobs without requesting IO resources tonight, as long as you don't mind that they will be killed at 7:00 am tomorrow. During the maintenance we will be migrating to NERSC global homes and changing the default chos to Scientific Linux 6.4. Please see the email below for details. If you have any questions or concerns please email consult@nersc.gov. Thank you, Lisa -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Major upcoming changes to PDSF on August 12th Date: Wed, 23 Jul 2014 13:52:40 -0700 From: Lisa Gerhardt <lgerhardt@lbl.gov> To: pdsf-users@nersc.gov Dear PDSF Users, PDSF will be offline from 7:00 am to 11:00 pm Tuesday August 12 for maintenance. We will set IO resources to 0 at 5:00 pm the night before. Feel free to submit jobs without requesting IO resources (just this once!), as long as you don't mind that they will be killed at 7:00 am on the 12th. Two major changes will be made to PDSF during the maintenance. First, the PDSF home directories will be migrated to the NERSC Global Home file system. The hardware that carries the PDSF home directories will be out of warranty in September and it must be retired. NERSC has graciously offered us the use of their global homes, which serves as the home directory for all the other NERSC systems. After consulting with the PDSF Steering Committee, we will be migrating all active PDSF users to Global Homes on August 12th. In an effort to make this transition as smooth as possible, we will be migrating over the data in the home directories of all active PDSF users. An active user is someone whose NERSC password is up to date and who has access to PDSF. If you are also an active user of Carver, Hopper, or Edison your data will also be migrated over, but it will go to a sub-directory inside your home directory called pdsf_old_home. Here's a list of only PDSF users. These are the users who will have their data copied DIRECTLY into their home directory. https://docs.google.com/document/d/17EPRjg7f6RCBNZti39SEjFnBEmLAtuFYdV7VJnKw2LU/edit?usp=sharing Here's a list of center-wide users. These are the users who will have their data copied into a SUB-DIRECTORY of their home directory. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1zd9_Hg-h7ehmKMrFpU2i2H-ijpAcGAykhrgo6lgDNWQ/edit?usp=sharing Please emailconsult@nersc.gov if you feel you are on an incorrect list. If your user name is not on either list, then we are not planning to migrate your data to global homes. If you feel this is in error, please emailconsult@nersc.gov. After the August 12th maintenance, the old PDSF home file system will be mounted read-only for two months or until the hardware fails, whichever comes first. The old home directories will also be backed up to HPSS. We will begin migrating data to global homes the week before the maintenance. On August 12th we will do a final sync to make sure all data is current, so please feel free to continue to use your PDSF home directory up until the day of the maintenance. Second, the default chos will change from Scientific Linux 5.3 to Scientific Linux 6.4. This decision was also made in consultation with the PDSF Steering Committee. This means that if you do not have a ".chos" file in your home directory (and many of you do not) you will end up in the newer operating system when you log in. Programs that are compiled for Scientific Linux 5.3 will not work in Scientific Linux 6.4. If you would like to keep Scientific Linux 5.3 as your default OS, just put "sl53" into a .chos file in your home directory. For more details about chos, please see this page: https://www.nersc.gov/users/computational-systems/pdsf/software-and-tools/chos/ We recognize that these changes are going to be somewhat disruptive. However, they are necessary for the continued smooth operation of PDSF. We are making every effort to make any interruptions as small as possible and we appreciate your patience and understanding while we make these transitions. Please emailconsult@nersc.gov if you have any questions or concerns, Lisa _______________________________________________ pdsf-users mailing list pdsf-users@nersc.gov
